In 1976, the Zayre Corporation hired Bernard (Ben) Cammarata, General Merchandising Manager of Marshalls, to launch a chain of stores selling family apparel and home fashions. In 1977, under Mr Cammarat’s leadership, the first two TJ Maxx stores opened in Auburn and Worcester, Massachusetts.

In the late 1980’s, Zayre spun off three of its brands: T.J. Maxx, Hit or Miss and Chadwick’s of Boston, ultimately to become the TJ Maxx Companies, Inc.
The TJX Companies, Inc. is the leading off-price retailer of apparel and home fashions in the U.S. and worldwide. As of January 28, 2017, the end of the fiscal year, TJX sales were $33.2 billion, and the Company operated more than 3,800 stores in nine countries, across three continents. In 2017, TJX ranked #87 in the Fortune 500 listings.
In 1990, TJX acquired Winners Apparel of Canada, growing it into Canada’s largest off-price retailer of family apparel and home fashions.
In 1992, HomeGoods was launched in the U.S., offering consumers a constantly changing selection of home decor from around the world.
In 1995, TJX acquired the 496 Marshalls stores, the second largest off-price retailer in the U.S. In the same year, TKX sold the Hit or Miss chain to members of Hit or Miss management and outside investors. The following year, TJX sold Chadwick’s of Boston and focused all of its efforts on TJ Maxx and Marshalls.
In 2001, TJX launched Canada’s HomeSense, which offers consumers a wide selection of off-price home fashions.
With stores in the U.S., Canada and Europe, it’s no surprise that TJX opened its 4000th store in 2017.
