Sprouts Farmers Market, Inc., is natural foods grocery chain headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona, USA.


In 1943, Henry Boney opened a fresh-fruit stand in San Diego, California. His one little fruit stand grew into a small chain of open-air farmers’ markets.

Twenty-six years later, in 1969, his sons two sons, Steve and Stan, introduced Boney’s Market, which became a popular community grocery store. In 1997, the boys renamed Boney’s Market to Henry’s Farmers Market, in honour of their father.

In 2002, members of the Boney family founded Sprouts Farmers Market in Chandler, Arizona.

In 2011, big changes were happening as Henry’s, Sun Harvest, and Sprouts came together again under Apollo Global Management. All three were rebranded as Sprouts stores. In 2012, Sprouts acquired Sunflower and rebranded it to Sprouts.


Sprouts became a public company traded on NASDAQ in 2013.


Sprouts success and admirable way of doing business did not go unnoticed. In 2018 and 2019, Fortune included Sprouts on its list of the World’s Most Admired Companies.



Sprouts Farmers Markets has 374 locations in the United States.

With an eye on public health, Sprouts Farmers Market partnered with MyFitnessPal in 2021 to provide a library of healthy recipes, health and fitness challenges, and food- and health-related articles.


In 2019, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognized Sprouts through its GreenChill program, a partnership with food retailers to reduce refrigerant emissions and decrease their impact on the ozone layer and climate change.


Since 2015, Sprouts has awarded more than $18 million to nonprofit partners across 23 states, through its Healthy Communities Foundation initiative.


About 90 percent of Sprouts more than 19,000 products are natural or organic. It has more than 7,500 vitamin and body care products, more than 4,500 gluten-free items, more than 3,900 non-GMO items and more than 900 raw items.
