Sleep Number: quality sleep is our passion
September 3, 2022

As of 2018, the company employed 4,220 people across the United States.
In 1980, a private company, Comfortaire Corporation of South Carolina, invented an adjustable air-supported sleep system.
Bob Walker left Comfortaire in 1987 and formed a new company called Select Comfort. In January 2013, Select Comfort acquired its major competitor, Comfortaire Corporation.
In March 2017, Select Comfort stopped offering the Comfortaire lineup of Air Beds to their third-party retailers/dealers and in November of that year, the company changed its name to Sleep Number Corporation.
Over the years, the company’s TV commercials featured such well-known individuals as actress Lindsay Wagner and conservative radio talk show hosts Glenn Beck, Paul Harvey and Laura Ingraham.
Sleep Number is the official sleep and wellness partner of the NFL and the company’s commercials feature star athletes like the Dallas Cowboys’ Dak Prescott.
The current CEO is Shelly Ibach.
The company manufactures the Sleep Number® bed, an adjustable air mattress that can be adjusted from a soft to a firm setting. The mattress, which has two chambers, one on each side, uses air pressure to provide soft to firm settings. This technology is a “marriage-saver!”
