Sleep Country Canada operates retail stores in
British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan,
Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick,
Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia.
The first four Sleep Country locations were launched in Vancouver in 1994 by partners, Christine Magee, Stephen K. Gunn and Gordon Lownds.
The three partners weren’t satisfied with just four locations and by 1996 they had 19 new stores in Toronto. Over the next five years, the company grew to a total of 72 stores in six regional markets, capturing about 40% of the market in each region.
In 2003, Sleep Country hit the stock market with an initial public offering of $130 million (CAD).

In 2006 Sleep Country Canada acquired the five Montreal Dormez-vous Sleep Centres as well as Sleep America Inc., a mattress retailer with 32 stores in Arizona.
In 2006, the company was ranked one of the top 50 companies to work for in Canada by the Globe and Mail.
It is best known for its radio jingle,
“Why buy a mattress anywhere else? Ding!”
In 2008, Toronto-based investment firms, Birch Hill Equity Partners Management Inc. and Westerkirk Capital Inc., made a friendly takeover offer worth $356 million (CAD). The offer was accepted.
In 2015, the company went public again, in an IPO on the Toronto Stock Exchange raising $300 million.
Its new ticker symbol was “ZZZ”.
