In 1920, a man by the name of Phil Levinson, established the first Rack Room Shoes in Salisbury, North Carolina. He later passed the business on to his son-in-law, Mort Lerner.

Between the years 1920 and 1984, the business grew slowly, but surely. In 1984, The Deichmann Group, a Germany-based shoe retailer, bought the 22-store chain. The new owner entered the Rack Room Shoes chain into a period of accelerated growth, modernizing its infrastructure along the way.

By 1990, Rack Room Shoes was operating 100 stores and, in 1994, opened its 200th retail location.

In 1995, the company relocated its
United States headquarters to a
72,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Over the next decade, Rack Room Shoes doubled its number of retail stores with locations in 24 states.

Off Broadway Shoe Warehouse was opened in the 1980s and was bought out by Rack Room in 2002. Until the buy-out, Off Broadway had competed with Rack Room at the lower end of the market. That said, Off Broadway argued that it had a more contemporary selection. Rack Room, on the other hand, claimed that its European ownership ensured its place at the top of footwear fashions. Off Broadway acquired 30 stores in the East Coast and Midwest regions and in California and continues to operate independently.

With an impressive collection of shoes for men, women and children, Rack Room offers comfortable footwear for dress, casual and athletic needs.

In addition to a wide selection of big-name brands, Rack Room also offers its own assortment of private brands, which it commissions from the best manufacturers in today’s market.
