November 18, 2023

Life is short.
Eat better pizza.

MOD Pizza is an American fast-casual pizza restaurant chain based in Seattle, Washington.

MOD Pizza has 557 locations in the United States.

The Svensons left Europe in 2008 and returned to their hometown of Bellevue, Washington. As health-conscious parents, they were frustrated by the lack of fast, affordable, healthy meals for their four sons. They decided to open their own restaurant with their partner, James Markham, who had previously started pizza parlors in San Diego, California and Shanghai, China. Markham helped to develop MOD’s house recipes.

Before founding MOD Pizza, the Svensons had founded the Seattle Coffee Company based in the United Kingdom which they sold to Starbucks in 1998. After the sale, Scott continued on as president of Starbucks Europe.

The first MOD Pizza location was in Union Square.

In 2010, Markham left MOD Pizza and started a California-based pizza chain.

By 2014, MOD Pizza had 31 locations in Washington, Oregon, California, Arizona, Colorado, and Texas. In that same year, the company received $15 million in private investment from Dunkin’ Donuts president Paul Twohig and TOMS Shoes CEO Jim Alling.

In 2015, new funding in the amount of $70 million made it possible for MOD to implement an aggressive growth strategy.

In January 2017, MOD Pizza opened its 200th location, which was located in Frederick, Maryland.

In its tenth year of business, MOD announced the opening of its 300th location in 2018.

By May 2019, MOD Pizza had raised $160 million and plans to expand to 1,000 stores within the next five years.
