When E. Maurice Labovitz opened his first women’s clothing store in 1931, he was determined to make it work. And work, it did. Despite the economic difficulties of the time, Maurices grew in leaps and bounds. Today, Maurices has 882 retail stores across the United States.

The business of business…
The Labovitz family sold Maurices to the American Retail Group in 1978. In 2005, the American Retail Group sold it to Ascena Retail Group.

In 2011, Maurices was rated one of the
“Top Ten Best Employers in Retail”
by Forbes.com.

In March 2019, at a valuation of $300 million, Ascena sold a majority stake in Maurices to a U.S. subsidiary of London-based OpCapita LLP. Maurices’ leadership team remained in place and was joined by former GAP CEO Jeff Kirwan as the company’s new executive chairman. Ascena has retained a minority stake in the company, with OpCapita’s CEO Henry Jackson welcoming the continued support of Ascena.

The 2020, what a year!
With a global pandemic raging in the spring of 2020, the world pretty much stopped. Retail stores closed and every man, woman and child was quarantined in their home for three months. Borders were closed, planes stopped flying and trains sat at the stations. Maurices donated $250,000 to rural hospitals in support of local healthcare workers.

Maurices cares
In November, 2019, Maruices partnered with Blue Star Families to support local military families, raising up to $20,000. In October of the same year, Maurices raised over $1 million for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. And, there are more such stories, so many more.
