How does a department store chain that big get started?

With one small store. Way back in 1927, Maxwell Kohl opened one small corner store in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It wasn’t until 35 years later, in 1962, that the first Kohl’s department store was launched. And, as the saying goes, the rest is history.

Some Kohl’s Highlights

In 1962, Kohl’s credit card launched with its first department store opening. The Kohl’s Cares charitable program was started in 2000 and in 2001, Kohls.com made its appearance. In 2014, Yes2You Rewards loyalty program was introduced and in 2015 Buy Online Pick Up in Store  became available in all Kohl’s stores.

The Greatness Agenda

Kohl’s Greatness Agenda is all about how they serve their customers in the best ways possible. Their “purpose,” is to contribute to the welfare of Americans by “inspiring and empowering families to lead fulfilled lives.”

So, how do they achieve this somewhat lofty goal?

The Greatness Agenda is built on five pillars: 1) creating an amazing product assortment; 2) offering an easy shopping experience; 3) building personalized connections with customers; 4) ensuring that customers receive incredible savings; and, 5) building winning teams of engaged and talented associates.

Something for everyone

Kohl’s offers both private and exclusive brands, such as Crofts & Barrow, Sonoma, Apt. 9,  Simply Vera (Vera Wang), Tek Gear, Mudd, and Jumping Beans. In addition, shoppers will find a wide variety of national brand merchandise. Definitely, something for everyone.
