Jiffy Lube®: Leave Worry Behind

In 1971, Edwin H. Washburn established the first Jiffy Lube®, a brand of automotive oil change specialty shops,  on 36th Street in Ogden, Utah. Today, there are 1,940 Jiffy Lube® locations in the United States and another 166 in Canada.

Jiffy Lube’s 1,929 US Store Locations

Over the 48 years since Jiffy Lube’s introduction to the marketplace, the company has become a leading provider of automotive preventive maintenance. Their 2,200 franchisees average about 22 million customers, yearly.

The company was founded on the values of
convenience, speed and quality service.

In 1979, W. James Hindman, then a Western Maryland College football coach, bought out Washburn’s seven Utah franchises and established Jiffy Lube International. It is generally stated that this is the company’s founding date, with Hindman as the founder. By 1987 Jiffy Lube had opened 1,020 franchises and company-owned stores.

In a merger between Penzoil and Quaker State in 1998, the 581
Q Lube stores were merged with Jiffy Lube and overlapping operations were closed down.
In 2002, Shell Oil purchased Penzoil-Quaker State.

Oil Change Schedule
A new program called Oil Change Schedule (OCS) was introduced in 2011. The program is based on the premise that based on variables such as driving habits and road conditions, not every car needs its oil changed at the same rate. Moving away from the old custom of changing the oil every 3,000 miles, customers could now choose an oil change schedule that would better suit their driving needs.

Jiffy Lube® University
Jiffy Lube technicians are not just “oil changers,” their skills cover a broad spectrum of preventative maintenance services for your vehicle. In keeping with the company’s value of quality service, every Jiffy Lube® technician must successfully complete a comprehensive training program. The Jiffy Lube® University has achieved accreditation as an Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) training provider, turning out some of the most highly qualified technicians in the business.

Jiffy Lube Multicare
In 2018, Jiffy Lube introduced a new brand extension called Jiffy Lube Multicare. No longer just a quick oil change business, Jiffy Lube Multicaare also offers such services as brakes and engine diagnostics, battery replacement and tire services.

There are currently about 1,000 Jiffy Lube locations that qualify for Jiffy Lube Multicare, and it is expected that about 75 percent of the Jiffy Lube network will implement the Jiffy Lube Multicare services.
