Cineplex Inc. is a Canadian entertainment company headquartered in Toronto, Ontario. The company operates 165 theatres across Canada.

The history of Cineplex goes back to the year 1912 and the founding of Famous Players Film Corporation by Hungarian-American film producer, Adolph Zukor. Famous Players Canadian operations began in 1920 when it bought Nathan Nathanson’s Paramount Theatre chain which Nathanson had established in 1916. This was followed by the the establishment of Odeon Theatres of Canada in 1941.

In 1978, Odeon merged with the Canadian Theatres chain to become  Canadian Odeon Theatres. The following year, Cineplex Corporation began operating and merged with Odeon in 1984 to form Cineplex Odeon Corporation, before being acquired by Loews Theatres in 1998.

Nathanson was the 5th richest person in the world and the first president of Famous Players Canadian Corporation.

The Cineplex Corporation was created in 1979 by Garth Drabinsky and Nat Taylor. They opened their first Cineplex theatre complex in the Toronto Eaton Centre.

Cineplex also owns and operates multiple brands for entertainment, such as UltraAVX, Xscape, Xscape Entertainment Centre, Player One Amusement Group and restaurants such as OutTakes and Poptopia.  It is also a joint partner in the Scene+ loyalty program with Scotiabank. Cineplex Inc’s current chief main competitors are Landmark Cinemas, Imagine Cinemas, CinéStarz, Cinémas Guzzo and Magic Lantern Cinemas.
