In 1946, Wayland Cato, along with his sons, Wayland Henry Cato, Jr., and Edgar Thomas, launched their clothing business in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The three men were driven to succeed and, in 1945, opened five main-street stores. Two years later, in 1947, they opened two more stores. Their first-year earnings were $404,000–a tidy sum for the 1940s.

Throughout the 1950s, the CATO company continued to open new stores, including some in shopping centers.

In 1968, the company went public and took itself private in 1980. In 1987, the company went public again, until 1987.

In 2014, Cato Fashions partnered with Celerant Technology to develop and launch its first e-commerce storefront initiative at catofashions.com.


In the 1990s, the business implemented a new discount pricing strategy and updated its inventory.

CATO stores are typically located in strip malls anchored by national discounters like Walmart.
